Many of you know Kurland as a luxurious country hotel with multiple awards for sublime luxury accommodation and world class events and dining. Over the past few years, Kurland has elegantly evolved into a sumptuous, exclusive-use accommodation with venues available for celebrations, conferences, weddings and private functions. In this new season, people often ask us about catering and food. With such a breath-taking setting we want to ensure that the eating experience matches the beauty of the estate and surroundings.

Whether you’re cooking for yourself or asking us to step in, you are spoiled for choice in the Plettenberg Bay area when it comes to sourcing delectable food and ingredients, with farm stalls, local farms and specialty delis on our doorstep. We have the Homestead vegetable garden too, brimming with lettuce greens, chillies, leeks and herbs and guests love to pick produce from the garden.

Often guests don’t know all that’s on offer during a stay at Kurland, so we chatted to Di Behr, Nicky Elphick, Alex Russell, and Glenda Lederle (the sisters behind Kurland’s ownership and management) and asked for foodie updates and inspiration for how to make a stay at Kurland complete.

Did you know that Kurland offers a variety of dining and catering options?

When guests come to stay at Kurland they have so many options for dining and eating onsite, whether you’re on a family holiday or celebrating a special occasion:

  • We offer a small, appetising menu with prices
  • You can cater and cook all of your own meals if you’re in the Villa or the Homestead
  • Brenda, one of our longstanding staff, can cook breakfasts and basic meals during your stay (think out-of-this-world roast chickens and pastas)
  • You can order picnics (maybe add on a spa treatment) and eat under the oak trees or on the Homestead veranda
  • Themba can braai for you or whip up pizzas in the pizza oven
  • We can arrange a local chef to take care of your entire stay
  • Or if you’re having a lavish affair we can recommend chefs and help to make anything happen

What are some ideas for creating food experiences at Kurland – either for everyday eating or for something more lavish?

For everyday eating, Brenda’s breakfasts are a must – either a continental spread or a cooked breakfast.  We can set up lunch and a braai in a shaded area with a beautiful view, at the table built around an old oak tree.  Because we’re so close to the sea, request a seafood braai.  Peter Behr is happy to forage for mushrooms with you or mussels that can be steamed the same day. For evenings, order butter chicken or roast lamb, curries or burgers from our menu. A stay wouldn’t be complete without planning a picnic with regional wine, cheeses, cold meats, all organised by Alex with a stunning vista as the backdrop.

For something more splashy and to feed a crowd, there are so many special things we can create – here are a couple of ideas:

Have a pasta party at the Villa.  Start with early cocktails that merge into supper served from the open plan kitchen – all homemade pastas of course and interacting with the chef!

Plan a poolside brunch at the Homestead with whole brioche tarts, sliced cold meats, sausages on the braai with mustards, Aperol spritzers and Bloody Marys.

Let us know what’s on your mind and we can make it happen.
