Crackling wood in the fireplace, and the smell of home-made cooking wafting out of the kitchen. Wind whispering in the Blue gum trees outside, drowned out by gentle farm noises and the rhythmic clip clop of horses’ hooves on cobbled paths as they pass by on their way to the stables.

You’d be forgiven for assuming that these sights and sounds have been plucked straight from a novel set in the English countryside, only the dreamy location is our very own Kurland farm.

Tucked away in the Crags, just 20 minutes from Plettenberg Bay, amidst rolling fields of countryside, is Kurland. It’s a place that feels wonderfully removed from our modern-day woes; a place where time slows down, nature takes priority, and calm envelops the atmosphere.

Winter, especially, has much to offer, whether you’re visiting the estate for a farm-style getaway, a special occasion with friends and family, or a cosy spa weekend to ward off the winter blues.

Here’s what we’re loving about the crisp, cool season that has settled in:

  • Comfort. Freshly baked chiffon cake, deliciously light and airy, enjoyed while sipping copious cups of hot tea, admiring the views of paddocks and mountains, and soaking up those gentle winter rays of sunshine.
  • Calm. Late mornings, and lazy afternoon walks under the cover of cosy jackets, admiring the last of the falling leaves. A drizzle here and there is nothing when you know that you’ll be met with roaring fireplaces and more-ish suppers of home-made soups and casseroles when you step inside.
  • Inspiration. Gentle farm scenes; with four-legged ‘farm hand’ Sophie (our dog) trotting up and down the paths, chickens clucking away in the background, and a flock of sheep gently grazing on the grass with newborn lambs around.
  • Adventure. Discover magical libraries and new rooms throughout the Homestead. Explore the 700-hectare estate and stumble upon the picturesque horse stables. Spotting new birds while walking almost endlessly in any direction you please. These are just some of the delights that country-style living brings.
