A slow change of season is settling in at Kurland. As nature starts to colour the trees with warm, rusty hues, her autumnal palette brings new seasonal produce to tantalise our palates.

We all know that we eat with our eyes first, and the beauty of a visit to Kurland is that fact that our culinary offerings are as ample and varied as our picturesque exclusive-use accommodation options.

Just a gentle reminder: Kurland’s meals are prepared exclusively for guests enjoying a stay with us in the Homestead or Villa – we do not operate a public restaurant.

Whether you’re self-catering your stay, enjoying Kurland’s in-house catering team’s favourites, hiring a local chef to cook for you, or mixing it up, there’s an eating experience to match the beauty of every view and veranda on the estate.

Breakfasts & Brunches

  • For casual, easy-going breakfasts we’ll set up a table in one of the courtyards. Long-standing staff member, Brenda, is famous for her home-cooked eggs and bacon, and ample continental spreads.

  • Or, if you and your guests want a more lavish affair, let us plan a poolside brunch for you. Think long tables decked with fresh flowers from the gardens, berries and homemade granola, poached peaches with Kurland honey and Greek yogurt, kedgeree, and poached eggs, together with apple custard cake and gingerbread loaves – the perfect way to start your holiday or family celebration.

Long, Lazy Lunches

  • Kurland’s master braaier, Themba, whips up a sensational braai under the shady boughs of the Homestead’s old oak tree. Consider making it a seafood braai with freshly steamed mussels to start. Other favourites include our home-made pasta and also pizzas cooked in the pizza oven.
  • On a beautiful day, guests often ask us to set up a picnic-style lunch close to the dam. Firm favourites that always make their way into the picnic baskets include crispy bacon rolls, a selection of local cheeses, salmon and sour cream on fresh sourdough bread, and fruit brioche tarts.

Intimate Candlelit Dinners

  • For quieter evenings enjoyed inside, sitting next to a roaring fireplace in the dining room or library, order butter chicken, roast lamb, curries or burgers from our in-house menu.
  • For larger numbers, we recommend a lamb on the spit at Katarina’s, surrounded by breathtaking views of the paddocks and the Tsitsikamma mountains as the backdrop.

Eating Out

When you’re staying at Kurland, it’s very possible that you won’t ever want to leave the estate, but we do love to support the sensational local businesses around us, so we’ve rounded up our top five local spots when you’re out and about:

  • Enricos overlooking Keurbooms Beach, for hearty Italian dishes
  • Newstead Winery (just next door to Kurland, on Redford Road) for scrumptious layered flatbreads and award-winning bubbles
  • Bramon Winery (across the road) for fresh, innovative salads and more-ish cheese mezze boards.
  • Blue Rock in Nature’s Valley for delicious prawns and curries
  • Nature’s Way Farm Stall – for light lunches, coffees and sweet treats

There you have it – many reasons to welcome the new autumnal season with a visit to Kurland. This is country living at its finest, with enough foodie occasions for multiple celebrations. We hope to see you soon!
